Joe’s Reflections……….2009

In build-up to the placement, I was hoping to gain an insight into the daily operations of a media outlet, look around the studios and make some contacts. I expected to be given mainly a running role, however they gave me a variety of jobs to do which helped give me a broad understanding of what working in the media involves.

I enjoyed the audition tasks, especially the task where we had to present a meal on a budget, as this allowed for creativity. I think the tasks were good ways of getting to know our personalities in a short space of time. It also showed how determined we were to get the placements.

The placement helped further my understanding of the media in many ways, from working in the office doing soundtrack work on previous episodes so they can get clearing for music, to being in the gallery seeing the producers work. I was given a wide array of tasks so my understanding of various areas was increased.

My favourite moment was probably when I was given the task of helping a small team to film vignettes for that night’s episode of Big Brother’s Big Mouth. It was especially interesting to see the finished article when it was aired on the show that night. On a broader scale, it was amazing how kind and willing to involve me everyone was. I expected everyone to be quite rushed around me, however they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and like part of the team, which was highly appreciated. My only anxious moment was approaching the studios on the first day when I didn’t know what to expect, but as soon as I was introduced to people I felt much more relaxed. My most long-lasting moment would have to be quite cliché and I’ll say the whole experience, purely because it was such an amazing 2 weeks.

If I had the chance to do it again, I don’t think I would do anything differently, because I consciously tried to make the most of the opportunity. However I may have attempted to establish more lasting contacts.

I would absolutely recommend the opportunity to others, it was a brilliant two weeks, I learnt a lot and it is ideal experience if you’re looking to work in the media, and I’m very grateful I got that opportunity!
